Will Stevens

Within this book, we will walk through seven stories of giving from the Old Testament. Each story contains archetypal givers and antithetical givers—characters who faithfully worship God through expressions of generosity, and characters who deny God’s blueprint for giving through idolatry and unbelief. However, we will find that God himself is the central character and the ultimate giver in each story. I want to make three central claims about giving in this book. 1) Giving is worship; 2) giving expresses faith; and 3) giving fosters community. Within each section we will see how giving is central to God’s purposes and plans for his people.

My hope is that this book will allow you to explore your own patterns of giving—individually and as a member of a church or family. Because “God loves a cheerful giver,” I also pray this book would engender heart-level transformation in you as you grapple with the Old Testament’s robust theology of giving. May the Lord who gives us life, who gives us our every breath, who grants us the blessing of children, gives us trials to shape our hearts, who gave His Son that we might believe and have eternal life, teach us to reflect his glory through our giving.
